Penguins Don't March To The Right

Luc Jacquet, director of the wonderful documentary "March of the Penguins," has finally spoken up about Michael Medved and others who praised the film as a story that bolsters the religious right's "traditional norms like monogamy, sacrifice and child rearing." Jacquet told the London Times, "If you want an example of monogamy, penguins are not a good choice. The divorce rate in emperor penguins is 80 to 90 per cent each year. After they see the chick is OK, most of them divorce. They change every year."

In other words, while it's one of the best nature documentaries ever made (along with "Winged Migration"), it's not a religious tract. Enjoy it for its beauty, but stop trying to politicize everything.

Incidentally, "March of the Penguins" will be released on DVD next month, but you can pre-order yours now.
