The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of

When Discovery sent me a press release about the imminent return of "Mythbusters" (on April 8th, beginning with a two-hour "Demolition Derby Special," in which Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman test whether a key scene from "Speed" is fact or fake film physics -– could moving the passengers to one side of a bus stop it from rolling in a sharp, fast right hand turn?), I flashed back to last June, when Adam appeared at James Randi's Amazing Meeting 6 in Las Vegas. There, he shared a story about one of his creative obsessions. It began with a quest for a replica of a dodo bird and culminated with his attempt to build a perfect -- and I mean perfect -- copy of "The Maltese Falcon" (not the film, but the prop).

Unfortunately, there were audio-visual problems at TAM6 and thus no permanent record of Adam's talk. Fortunately, six months later, he gave the presentation again at EG'08, and this time, Adam's obsessive glory was recorded for your viewing pleasure...
