Kid Goes To Store, Cops Freak Out

In a quiet suburban neighborhood in Ohio, a father let his six-year-old daughter walk to the convenience store by herself. When she didn't come home, he went looking for her and the store owner told him the police had taken her. Next thing he knows, he's being questioned as a bad parent for teaching his kid to be independent.

This is the sort of story Lenore Skenazy fights against in her book and blog, Free Range Kids, so I invited her to talk about it on my America Weekend show. She explained why the father hadn't done anything wrong and didn't deserve to be investigated by agents from Child Protective Services.
