The US Postal Service, which is losing nearly $16 billion/year, wanted to save some money by stopping Saturday mail delivery, beginning in August. It sounded like a good idea, since technology has made it easier to communicate, bank, and pay our bills electronically and cut the volume of mail by one-third. But Congress couldn't allow that kind of fiscal restraint, so it ordered the USPS to continue Saturday delivery, without offering alternate ideas on how it could save money.
