The Overview Effect

Four decades ago, astronauts on Apollo 8 were doing a live telecast while orbiting the moon, and turned the camera towards Earth. That gave us the very first pictures of our planet as a whole -- the home of every human and every animal that ever lived -- against the vastness of space.

That perspective affected a lot of people, not the least of whom were those astronauts and the many who have followed. This short film, "The Overview Effect," includes several of them talking about what that view from above meant to them, and includes some of the stunning footage shot from various missions over the decades.
